They would lose me, if I had an alternative. In my neighborhood it’s cable or 1mbps DSL. Neighborhoods across the street to the east and west both have nice and cheap fiber but my neighborhood is older than one and less affluent than the other.

Pretty sure they already have been. I’m convinced more money makes you more stupid.

It’s a lot of fun, but not an internet replacement yet. They did just come out with a new dual band that has enough bandwidth to do something useful. Can’t wait to give it a try.

Still very worth setting up. I have a node that runs in my attic, and a few that I can take around with me. I can get good single most anywhere in my neighborhood, and I have enough nodes nearby that I can pretty much communicate with people all over the metro area (I’m in the twin cities).

Why doesn’t anyone see this for what it is. They put monitoring for certain keywords but fucked up the code and it blocked some users through incompetence. They fixed the filters, but I guarantee they are sending reports to the White House…

I figure by then, it will all be part of some AI training set one day. Hopefully my shitty writing and bad opinions poison the shit out of it.

The rich are the problem, something needs to be done about them. I’m hungry.

I used to pay like $69 for them in the US. Looks like they add a hundred bucks or so to the price…

I’ve got 30tb or so made up of 4 and 10tb used drives. All I’ll buy anymore. In fact, I need to change out of of my parity drives. Hopefully used market is still somewhat affordable.

But your comment made me go back and look out of disbelief. How does a person get this far down a rabbit hole?

I intend on continuing to use it as long as I can with my adblockers, noscript extensions, pinhole and so forth in place. I will keep up the game as long as it can be played, and when I lose, I’ll walk away.

I cannot tolerate the enshittification cycle. I’m happy to pay for services, I’m not happy being frogboiled into having to pay for them.

I completely agree, that why I said I don’t blame the guy, was just doing what Apple encouraged him and all of us to do.

My comment was more meant as advice. Apple definitely should be making this right, BUT this is also a good eye opener for the rest of us.

I’m not blaming the guy, but he seems smart enough that he should have known better. Data isn’t secure if it’s in a single location, he gave up control and the inevitable happened.

I do not trust anyone with my data, the more important, the more sure I am that I have copies in several locations, including ones that are entirely in my control. My photos exist on multiple devices, cloud, my selfhosted immich server and my offline backup. Same with documents and other important data. My ripped movie collection is not backed up since I have the physical media.

Do not give up control, the systems are all setup to give you the illusion of security, but then this kind of thing happens. Maybe I’m extra paranoid since I’ve been the victim of identity theft but I’m comfortable with my level of paranoia.

Update- for the record, yes, Apple needs to make this right. I DO NOT blame the victim, my comment is here as advice, not to shit on the dude.

It’s ironic how so many of us find ourselves being extremely valuable for the exact reasons they can’t stand us. As IT, I’m used to being seen as nothing more than red marks on a budget to the folks making decisions. The only thing they hate more than listening to us, is when they have to.
