I have.
But after personally having suffered 4 complete disk failures of WD drives in less then 3 years, it’s really more like a “fool me once” situation.

I feel the exact same about WD drives and I’m quite happy that I switched to Seagate.

Now if I build one myself something I’ve never done is it easy to just move my storage over and not lose any data and be able to access it?
No can’t just plug the HDDs into the new machine like you would when switching to another synology. You’ll have to copy the data to your new machine.
You’d still put the 40TB drives in a raid? But eventually you’ll be limited by the number of bays, so larger size is better.
